General Information When attending water based activities at either the pool or the beach, you should bring along a sensible swimming costume, a towel and some warm clothes to change into. You will be informed of the of cost at the start of the course which will include the examination fee, and required supporting literature. Pool Based Activities Pool Awards are normally provided between October and May and the First Aid / Resuscitation Awards, Life Support being provided throughout the year. You will need to bring a sensible swimming costume, a towel and some warm clothes to change into after the water session. You should wear loose clothing for land based exercises, where you will need, at times, to be on the floor, either as a rescuer or a casualty. There are segregated changing rooms at Victoria Park Swimming Pool and you will need to bring a £1 coin for the lockers. The appropriate entry fee (currently £1.50 1/1/05) will be payable on the night of training where this is not included in the cost of a course. Some Pool Awards have specific requirements for additional clothing to be worn such as for the Bronze Medallion where candidates will be required to wear a long sleeved shirt, trousers and jumper as part of the examination. Your instructor will inform you of any specific requirements the prior week. Beach Based Activities Patrolling duties are undertaken from May Day Bank Holiday week-end until the last week-end in September where the Open Water Awards are normally provided between June and Sept. As well as a sensible swimming costume, you will need to bring, a towel and some clothes to wear during patrols (as a minimum, a yellow tee shirt, red shorts/skirt and trainers), as you may get wet, as well as warm clothes to change into after patrolling. Additional clothing may be available for use for specific activities, such as dry suits and waterproofs, however if you have your own, this would be useful. Life jackets and crash hats are mandatory for particular types of patrol and will be provided. There are segregated changing rooms at the PSVL HQ but space is rather limited. Showers are also available for use by patrolling members. As with most activities of this type, there is a chance of members accidentally cutting themselves, or coming in to contact with contaminated water and the possibility of infection should be considered and appropriate preventative measure taken. |
