New HQ Appeal

New Headquarters Appeal

The focus for the current Portsmouth and Southsea Voluntary Lifeguard appeal is for a New Lifeguard Headquarters.

Our present building was a former seafront shelter converted and opened on 19th April 1986 as a short term solution to our accommodation problems when our earlier building was demolished to make way for the Pyramids Complex. This headquarters has a boat store, operations room and two small changing rooms. It was paid for jointly between Portsmouth City Council  and ourselves but is now long past the end of its useful life. The boat store is not large enough to store our large rescue boat, which has to be stored at Fort Cumberland in Eastney, which is some distance from our Headquarters. This adds to our problem in launching and we have had to purchase an old Landrover to tow the boat from Eastney to launch at the Camber in Old Portsmouth.

We are now in urgent need of a purpose built Lifeguard Headquarters building.

The Proposed new Building

To maintain our current level of service to the public we urgently need a new headquarters building. Portsmouth City Council are supporting us and have drawn up plans for such a building on our current site near the Rock Gardens, but the estimated cost is between £250,000 and £350,000. The new building will consist of a large boat store for both our rescue boats and Landrover, crew changing facilities with showers, a lookout, crew rest room, operations room, first aid room and also a classrooms that we can hold courses and training for our members and also offer resuscitation and water safety classes to schools and other members of the public throughout the year.

We will be applying for Lottery funding but will firstly need to match this with locally raised money.

Can you help us in any way with this mammoth task?
